We realize that each youth is at a different point in his/her journey with the Lord, and we seek to develop the spirituality of these young people in multiple ways that help each of them grow in their knowledge and devotion to our Lord Jesus Christ. The goal of this youth program is to teach young people God's Word, connect them with God's family, help them grow in faith, enable them to serve others, and teach them how to honor God with their lives. Youth Group (6th-12th grade) meets at The Fish Tank from 5:00-6:00 pm on Sunday evenings during the school year. Our Bible study consists of teaching, prayer, food, and fun. We do not meet from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The Jr. & Sr. High Youth also participate in other events throughout the year, such as: Christ In Youth Believe conferences (Jr. High only!), summer camp at Camp Illiana, community service projects, going to Christian concerts, overnighters at the church, going out to dinner together, pool parties, plus other youth group parties and special events. We want unchurched teenagers to know that we can be Christians and still have fun! Also, all of our youth (grades 1-12) have decided to collectively sponsor a child who is part of the Compassion International program. Mary Nungari Kamau is a little girl from Kenya who lives in an AIDS affected area. We collect a weekly offering at Youth Group and during Kids' Time, and 100% of the collection goes toward our monthly contribution that helps give Mary the proper health care, nutrition, education, and other important things that she might need. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (NIV) That's our theme! We love little children, just as our Savior did! It's a proven fact that the sooner you begin teaching a child about Christ, the better chances he/she has of making a life-changing commitment to Him before leaving home. Statistics show that a vast percentage of people make a decision for Christ before the age of 14. Past that, the chances of reaching them is slim. That is why one of the main focuses of the church needs to be children! So, we have re-geared our approach to children's ministry in the past year in order to give the younger children (preK-5th) more of our attention. The children have a special opportunity for worship and learning on Sunday mornings during Kids' Time (Jr. Church), which meets during the adult worship service from 9:15 to 10:15. This has been recently restructured and seemed to be working very well. First of all, we have supervised nursery for ages 0 through 2 yrs. old. Then, for 3 yrs. old and up, Kids' Time begins with all of the children together for praise time in the Children's Church room in the basement. After this is over, the kids are separated into two classes for their lesson: one class for 3 yrs. old through Kindergarten and one class for elementary grades 1 through 6. Then at 10:30, they transition into the Sunday School period, where the lessons and activities are a continuation of the Kids' Time curriculum. This integrated program re-enforces the one central theme for the day, rather than overwhelming their minds with multiple Bible lessons in one day. Also, the younger group of students used to meet on Sunday evenings at the church from 6:00-7:00ish, right after the Youth Group met. Then in January 2007, we decided to try something different by moving it to Wednesday nights. Kids' Group (as we now call it) now meets at the church on Wednesday nights from 6:00-7:00. Aside from the regular Kids' Group gatherings, which involve interactive teaching, singing, food, and lots of fun and games, the kids also participate in other activities throughout the year, such as: Community Vacation Bible School, summer camp at Camp Illiana, participating in the children's Christmas program, special parties, events, and trips (such as going to the Children's Museum in Indianapolis). If you haven't joined us yet, we hope you will decide to drop in soon! |
